Activation - Is the process where an iPhone is linked to a service contract with AT&T. Until you activate the iPhone you can not use any of its features. The only thing that you can do is make an emergency call to 911.

anySIM - An unlocking program from the iPhone Dev Team. This allows any SIM to be used in an iPhone running 1.0.2 firmware. This is the GUI version of the iUnlock program also from the iPhone Dev Team. It is also functionally similar to the Unlock.app (that Harro distributed just days before).

iBrickr - Allows for jailbreaking, and file management (including ringtones and programs). This is a Windowsprogram.
iNdependence - Is a program (currently deprecated to 1.0.2 firmware) that allows for jailbreak, bypassing activation,installation of SSH and simplifies changing of SSH passwords, managing ringtones and wallpapers. This is a Mac program.
iPhoneInterface - A deprecated command line program that allowed you to add or remove files or programs from the iPhone's file system. You need to jailbreak before you can use this program, at least initially. This is a Mac andWindows program.
iUnlock - Is a command line version of anySIM released by the iPhone Dev Team. This is for unlocking iPhones with firmware 1.0.2
Jailbreak - This is a process that allows you to run unsigned code on the iPhone. The iPhone programming runs in a sandbox. Unless you can break out of this sandbox, you can only run the programs Apple has already installed on the iPhone. You are required to jailbreak your iPhone to run any 3rd party applications. Programs like Jailbreak(deprecated), iBrickr and AppTapp Installer and wiNstaller perform this for you. Jailbreak is a Mac and Windows program.
Locked - A locked iPhone is one that can only use a properly contracted AT&T SIM to make phone calls with. This isthe SIM the iPhone comes with out of the box.

SIM - A Subscriber Identity Module is a removable smart card for mobile cellular telephony devices such as mobile computers and mobile phones. SIM cards securely store the service-subscriber key (IMSI) used to identify a GSM subscriber. The SIM card allows users to change phones by simply removing the SIM card from one mobile phone and inserting it into another mobile phone or broadband telephony device.

iPhone Basic Terminology

Here's a sample of some of the codes you can try.

*#06# - Displays your International Mobile Equipment Identity (or IMEI for short). The IMEI number is used by the GSM network to identify valid devices and therefore can be used to stop a stolen phone from accessing the network.

*#21# and press Call. Settings for call forwarding for calls, data, fax and sms.

*#30# and press Call. Calling line presentation check.

*31# (followed by the number you are dialing) - Sets outgoing "Caller ID" to be private.

#31# (followed by the number you are dialing) - Sets outgoing "Caller ID" to be visible.

*#31# (followed by the number you are dialing) - Displays current setting of outgoing "Caller ID". (Disabled = visible, Enabled = private).

*#33# and press Call. Check for call all barring.

*#43# and press Call. Determine if call waiting is enabled.

*#61# and press Call. Check the number for unanswered calls. Shows the number for voice call forwarding when a call is unanswered. Also shows the options for data, fax, sms, sync, async, packet access and pad access.

Field Test menu
The Field Test menu is used to view various engineering parameters, such as signal strength, frequency band, tower ID, et cetera. This is a menu that lets you look at the inner workings of the iPhone from a telephone technician's view. The great majority of iPhone users will never need access to this menu.

You get to this menu by entering *3001#12345#* and press Call.
